In 2016 Q3, the publication segment of China’s B2C market reached RMB5.59 billion in size, a rise of 16.2% year on year, shows the Quarterly Monitoring Report on China’s B2C Market 2016 Q3 published by Analysys.
Q3 coincided with the start of the new term, which made the sales of reference books a highlight. Moreover, online book sites also hosted a number of promotion events, which drove the high growth rate of the entire market during the quarter.
As to market landscape, the first class in the online book market seized a market share of more than 83%, and Dangdang.com maintained the dominant position in the market and steadily ranked the first with a market share of up to 45.2%. JD.com and Tmall.com ranked the second and third with 21.8% and 16.1% respectively. While focusing on the online book retail as principal operation, Dangdang.com gradually penetrated into upstream publishing, digital publication, development of its own reader brand, instant publishing and used book community, and also opened O2O brick-and-mortar bookstores combining reading, coffee, creative idea, exhibition and other business formats in a move to build a comprehensive ecosystem. This reflects Dangdang.com takes root in the cultural reading area.
In the opinion of Analysys, as the new retail time is coming, book sales, which went online at the early stage of the e-commerce industry, will move faster to evolve in the direction of O2O integration on the basis of online presence. The dividend of cultural consumption derived from the domestic consumption upgrade will give birth to a bigger growth space for publication and book reading. The change in the form of creation and reading habit will bring more possibilities to the publication and book area.
